Mum is a ten year old street child. She is the face of The Pilgrim Project.  Mum spends her days collecting plastic bottles with her brothers to help feed her family.  It is a competitive enterprise.  She stole our hearts!  Mum is pictured here with Annie.  Donations made it possible to purchase new clothes for her and food for her family. Mum is unable to attend school since she must work to assist her family financially.

The people in Kampot, Cambodia need your help.  Donations are lovingly accepted. 100% of your donations go directly to the children of Kampot.

A typical home in Kampot.

We would like to raise money for bicycles for the orphanage and the scholarship kids.  A bike can mean the difference in going to school or to a job.

We hope to return to Cambodia in January 2010.  Luggage
restrictions make it more difficult every year to take the materials that are desperately needed.
Books in English and educational materials are scarce.

We have been so fortunate to have been subsidized by contributions from the Sylvania Schools Career Tech teachers and students.  We need your help!

We are always looking for ideas & feedback.  Please e-mail your

thoughts to me at

Thank you to Sylvania Pacesetter Club for the donation of shirts and shorts.  The boys were very proud of their new clothes.

THE  PILGRIM PROJECT

Mission Statement:  To realize our full potential by meeting the challenges of the global community.  Inspiring and promoting volunteerism through individual involvement.

A note from the founder:

The Pilgrim Project was founded by my daughter Annie and me after our second season of volunteering in Cambodia.  We had fallen in love with the wonderful people of this country and we needed to share their stories, struggles and successes with others.

We are met with much curiosity about this project. We have spoken with community groups and many high school classes in an effort to bring relevance to the project.  There is much curiosity about Cambodia.  Americans try to wrap their minds around homes without running water or electricity.  Imagine a classroom without computers or smartboards.  Riding two or three on a bicycle to get to school.
Sharing a pencil and a book.

Why, Cambodia?

We were fortunate to take our first step into the world of volunteerism in
Kampot, Cambodia.  Two and one half hours south of Phnom Penh lies this small community on the river.  The absolute kindness, curiosity and overall generosity of these people never ceases to amaze me.  The children are bright, happy and industrious.  The poverty is absolute. The will to survive and rebuild is fierce.

After the Vietnam War spilled into Cambodia and the Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge years, the area has been slowly rebuilding.  The resources for schools and hospitals are sorely limited.  These wonderful people are relying on outside help.  They do not ask for handouts; they ask for a helping hand.

Why Cambodia?  Everything is met with appreciation and enjoyment.  Everything is treasured.

The young self taught teachers are full of questions…how do you pronounce this? What does this word mean?
Explain this… students range in age from 7 to young monks barely out of their teens.  All have one thing in common…the desire to learn English. They know that this is the way to bring their nation back from disaster.

The classrooms are barren.  A whiteboard, some battered benches and a few pictures on the wall.  Many students cannot afford their own books (approximately 50 cents) and they share pencils.  The children are polite, curious and full of laughter.  And they are grateful for everything.
